Family, Community & Society (Prosocial)
What makes a happy family? How can we work together and get along? What can we do to make the world a better place?
Prosocial principles are based on research into how small groups work together. People are often torn between doing what they want and what their family or community would like. It can be hard to build harmony and have people to work to a common purpose.
Capitalism and Socialism have strengths and weaknesses. Capitalism assumes that families and society function best when individuals are left to their own devices. However, evidence shows that we have enormous health and economic inequalities.
Socialism has failed because centralised planning cannot adapt to local contexts, and people at the top of the hierarchy have often exploited their authority for personal gain. We need a new way.
Prosocial principles were discovered by Economics Nobel Prize winner, Elinor Ostrom. Based on her global studies of how groups pool resources, she produced a list of eight core design principles.
Since her work and her death, David Sloan Wilson, Paul Atkins, Tony Biglan and Steve Hayes have continued her work. Adapting it to small groups, prosocial paves the way for more co-operative communities.
The Openforwards Self-Help Family, Community & Society library includes articles, videos and podcasts exploring the essential questions that we ask today.
