I’ve got Trust Issues
When you have trust issues, it can lead to intense spells of fear and anxiety. You feel like you can’t cope and that something is deeply wrong with you. Often, this comes from feeling frightened and unsafe growing up.
You can also have periods where you feel painfully lonely and depressed. You blame yourself for the way you are. And other times, you may feel intensely angry at how others have let you down. The swing between these different moods makes you feel different to other people. In fact, you may have noticed that other people find it challenging to be around you.
None of this is your fault. Trust issues come from Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Common examples of this are growing up around a lot of shouting, aggression or physical violence. Sexual abuse from family members or other people you should have been able to trust, leaves a scar that shapes how you feel about yourself and other people. ACEs are also caused by parents who were manipulative instead of caring, critical instead of encouraging and dismissive instead of accepting.
Once you understand more clearly your own childhood experiences, it can help you to deal with your own trust issues in relationships.
How we can help
We help by giving you time and space to tell your story. We’ll listen. And, we’ll help you understand your past. Through this process, you can begin to come to terms with what has happened and get help to cope better with life right now. Our aim is to help you change your future, despite your past.
The most useful way to approach this is to work closely with a therapist. In therapy, together, you’ll:
- Develop a vision of the life you want
- Create a plan to build better habits and coping mechanisms
- Explore the subject of trust and get support to make your own choices and decisions
You will get help learning to reflect on day-to-day events that have become challenging. With the guidance and support of a CBT Specialist, we’ll help you without telling you what to do or taking over the process.
Our Psychology Service aims to help you build your resilience. Through a combination of methods, we’ll listen to your experiences, move forwards at your pace and design interventions and exercises that show you new ways of coping. We can help you to be stronger and get closer to people, learning to trust them and repairing relationships when they break down.
